What you need to know: Stack A Cake is a super cute and clever game for young kids. It’s super simple, but incorporates a variety of social-emotional, motor, and cognitive skills that young kids need to learn.

Game idea: It is Bear’s birthday! Stack his cake and candle before he gets home.

Stack A Cake comes with 5 cake blocks (3 with cut out hearts),

a track, and a house.

To play: Roll the dice, and follow the instructions. You will either have to give a hug, sing, dance, stack or move the bear one step closer to home. Remember, you want the cake to be ready for Bear when he gets home.

Another game variation: Read the story card about the forest friends who are preparing for Bear’s birthday. Then, nest the blocks from smallest to largest to peak at the gifts that the forest friends brought for Bear.

Why I love Stack A Cake: This game can be modified and played in many ways. For a younger child, simply nesting and stacking the blocks can be a good way to work on size recognition, balance, coordination, and grading pressure.

Once you think a child is ready you can read the story to get them familiar with the game theme and characters, then add the dice and track for an additional challenge. Playing the game teaches kids to follow directions, work towards a goal, sustain attention and interact with you all in fun an playful way.

Tip: Stack A Cake is also great for initiating and encouraging pretend play. Remember to ask questions about the story to encourage problem-solving and creativity, and most importantly allow time for open-ended play that is child directed.
